The Centre
'Students with particular needs are supported in ‘The Centre’ by a specialist team.
The Centre is a specific self contained resource within the school which has been developed to provide a range of facilities. It comprises a number of rooms and areas including an IT suite, art and craft room, group work room, large learning room, multi purpose central hall, food preparation room and office accommodation.
Within The Centre, agencies and services including the Youth Development Service, Social Worker, Connexions Personal Advisor and others work in partnership with the school to support students. '
What is the Purpose of Learning Support?
Learning support is provided to ensure that all students achieve their full potential.
Who has Learning Support?
From time to time many students will benefit from support given by the Learning Support and Development Team:
All students with particular needs including learning, communication, emotional, behavioural and social needs will be supported in order to overcome barriers to learning.
How is the Need for Learning Support Identified?
The need for support is identified in a variety of ways. The overriding principal is that students are assessed on an individual basis using a variety of measures including information obtained from their previous schools and referrals from their Mentor, Head of Community and parents.
All students are assessed five times in each school year and if they are not achieving the expected level of progress their mentor can refer them for further assessment.
How and Where is Learning Support Provided?
Wherever possible, learning support is provided to the students in subject lessons by a large team of trained teaching assistants. What Communication is there with Parents and Carers?
Parents and carers are encouraged to work closely with staff who are always accessible to discuss and consider any matters arising concerning their children. Additionally meetings are arranged on a more formal basis twice a year on Academic Review days to review progress and set targets. Centre staff are always available on all other evenings arranged for specific purposes.
What Provision is Made for Disabilities?
The school is fully equipped with ramps and lifts to provide easy access for all those with physical disabilities. The school provides access to learning for all students, parents / carers and others in the community with disabilities.
